Hello my coveted readers Today we are going to take a look at the treasure trove of Happy Hours available in the community. From the extended, to the weekend, to the reverse, it seems that everyone has their own take on the happy -hour. So, for the next few paragraphs, I will give expert insight into how to navigate the landscape of Venice’s maze of happy hours. Today we will look at some of the neighborhood heavyweights.

The Canal Club: this local treasure is, hands down, one of the most established and consistently enjoyed happy hours in Venice. Happy hour here is seven days a week, starting at 5:00 p.m. and going until close Sunday- Wednesday. On the food side, their happy hour menu has quite a wide variety, with a different promo daily, such as $2.50 slider Monday or $2,50 turkey taco tuesday. Drink-wise they have half price draft on Mondays and half price margaritas on Tues, as well as a selection of $5 libations daily. Bottom line: from kick ass sushi to chipotle cheese fries to quality draft beer, the Canal Clubs happy hour has got it all, including a great staff. My favorite is the New Zealand baked mussels. And, rumor has, they have a reverse happy for the weekends coming soon!!

Nikki’s: This sports bar, located on Market street, must be high on the list of any serious happy hour patron. Established four years ago, Nikki’s has cemented its status as a destination during the hour of happiness. The reduced price festivities at Nikki’s happen daily from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and also “reverse style” from 10:00 p.m. to midnight on Thursday. Outstanding Ceviche’, Nachos and tuna or roast beef sliders, with a choice of three different kinds of fries, are the hallmark plates of this fine establishment. However, they have a host of other tasty treats, all half off. To seal the deal, during happy hour all drinks are 50% off as well. My pick here would be Long Board draft and shrimp cocktail. Bottom line: You can drink dirty martinis, eat pizza, tip well and leave with a buzz, for under $20.

Danny’s: Monday and Tuesday happy hour from 4:00 p.m. until closing!! Need I say more? Ok, I will. $5 well drinks and wine, $4 drafts, and $3-$5 appetizers, make this “Venice museum” hang perfect for adult refreshments. The unsung hero of Danny’s happy -hour has got to be the $3.00 tacos. You get two of your choice, fish, chicken or veggie, and they all are seriously good. The insider’s bet here is $4 pints of Angel City Stout, which weighs in at 10% ABV, and fish tacos. Bottom line: Happy hour never ends on Monday and Tuesday!!Oh yeah, sounds dangerous!!

Sidewalk Café: The Sidewalk’s Oceanfront Walk patio is probably the best people watching spot in town. Where else can you eat, catch a buzz and get face to face with the freak show, from a safe distance? The happy hour here is classic American bar style. $3-$5 nachos, wings, chicken (do not have) fingers, and mozzarella sticks accompanied by $2.50 Bud and Bud Light drafts and $4 margaritas, make the Sidewalk reminiscent of many a past happy hour. The journeyman’s choice for the sidewalk would be: four pints for ten bucks!!! Oh, yeah, I am on a liquid diet Bottom line: from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. you can sit inches away from all the color of the Venice boardwalk, watch the Lakers, and enjoy straight ahead bar treats at super-affordable prices.

La Cabana: if you happen to find yourself off the beach and near Lincoln Blvd., then quick, get to La Cabana to catch your bearings!! And if it is Thursday, grab a $2 Dos Equis. Oh yeah, and if it is Friday, grab a $5 shot of Patron. Wait!! If it is Tues., you can get a taco for $2. Do not forget $4 house ‘ritas on Monday and $ 5 Cabo ‘ritas on Wed. OMG, are you going to be able to remember all that? Do not worry, all you need to know is that La Cabana has killer traditional Mexican food and runs different drink specials every day. Also, they are open until 3:00 a.m. nightly. The thing to do here would be to eat enough tacos on Tuesday that you are full until Thursday, then drink enough beer so you are full until Tues . Bottom line: they have the best Mexican food around and bitchin’ all day long drink specials daily. You just cannot go wrong at La Cabana. Hey, that almost rhymes!

The Air Conditioned: Fridays at the AC is home of the “Horny Toad Happy Hour.” No, it is not a gathering of alcoholics with over-active libidos. Rather, it is Venice’s own Horny Toad performing their weekly 3 set gig. $10 buckets of Dos Equis, $5 apps and “you call it” drinks as well as free entry make this a locals dream. Come on down and see you friends, bring your kids (you old bastard) and listen to one of the bands you grew up with. Yeaahhhhh, sounds like a party. Furthermore, if you ride your bike you get free shot. Way to go AC for being enviro-concious!! Bottom line: Great food, cheap drinks, familiar faces, live music and no cover. What else is there? Oh yeah, five or six dispensaries are within walking distance. Now, ready, set. . . .drink!!!!!!!!!

O’Briens: All day happy hour from noon to 7:00 p.m. every day of the week!! What else needs to be said? Well, how about they have Stone IPA on draft for $5 a pint. Wooo-hooo, ohh yeah, San Diego’s finest now available on Main St. That has got to be one of the best taps in town. But wait, they have a whole list of bad ass draughts, both premium and domestic, not to mention $5 apps that rule! Top that off with cheap well and wine and you have the recipe for happiness, seven hours a day, seven days a week. Go O’Briens!!!. http://www.obriensonmain.com/index.htm

Trip- John Decoster, Trips owner, knows beer! Anyone who has visited Trip know that this is not your average brew slammin’spot. From $2 Bud draughts daily from 11:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. to the Green Flash, West Coast IPA tap, Trip has something for everyone, including wine and cocktails. To top it off, The bartender makes custom Boars Head Deli sandwiches right in front of you!! I mean, what says love more than a $2 draft and jalapeno cheese melt? Right on John!! www.tripsantamonica.com

Hama Sushi- Okay, I love Scallops, and if you love Scallops too, then you should check out Hama’s Scallop Dynamite. And, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. daily, it is half price. As are the rest of the treats on the HH menu. There are a plethora of items unique to Hama that are well worth the trip: Salt and Pepper Octopus to name one. As well, all drinks are discounted, and they have an one of the most varied Saki menus around. So if you are thirsty like I am thirsty, and want some killer grub as well, than I will see you at Hama!www.hamasushi.com

The Garter: Legendary local hang the Garter on Lincoln is open at 6:00 p.m. daily for discount drinks. $1 off beer and $4 well oohh yeah. Wait, that means PBR is $3 until 8:00 p.m. woo hooo. What a deal. And, the happy hour flows seamlessly into the great entertainment served up nightly. Rock on, and do not forget they have an acoustic music night on Mondays. See you there!www.thegartervenice.com
